The award was based on the research Dr. Jury is doing at Trent and with colleagues at the University of Toronto and University of Melbourne in using nuclear technology to develop a device that will detect landmines. Dr. Jury's work has been endorsed by the Canada Landmine Foundation, which raises funds for the eradication of antipersonnel landmines worldwide. Landmines kill and maim thousands every year. Dr. Jury's research group includes computer scientist Dr. Richard Hurley. Their technology is also being applied to medical diagnostic imaging that will enable greatly enhanced resolution and faster radiography scans of patients.

Dr. Jim Jury was presented with the YMCA Peace
Medallion at an event hosted by the Family YMCA of Peterborough
on January 23rd. The award is given annually in celebration of
YMCA World Peace Week to an individual or group whose life and
activities demonstrate that the "responsibility for peace
begins with each person, in relationship with family and friends
and extends to community life and national activities."
