Community by Maureen Hughes '89
As just one example, witness the hundreds of ways that we are coming back to Trent (from near and far) and contributing to the life of its current students. How many of us are coaching Trent teams; are acting as mentors for Trent students, not to mention the ways we're mentoring to future Trent students we meet every day? Count the hundreds of us who weekly give so much time to our local community teams, our own community clubs and organizations, and influence the activities of many other groups. Then, of course, there are the hundreds of us who are willing, able, and excited to give directly back to Trent and its students by donating our own hard-earned money. In recent years, and especially during the recent Beyond Our Walls campaign, our participation as Alumni has grown and serves to show just how much influence we still have on the University. Moreover, there are many of us who are currently helping to plan the next steps of Trent as we move into what will surely be a very dynamic time in our history. All of these ways of contributing are even more important to us as a society in light of the recent dramatic events and changes in our world. Who among us would not want or need the assistance of our neighbours at some point in our lives? Has our desire to help others, to contribute to our communities, to improve the lives of other people come from our time in the Trent community? Maybe, but I doubt it. I think that our desire to help others was in us before we arrived at Trent; but that we all came to Trent speaks highly of the values of our school and it's unspoken mission to positively influence us as tomorrow's leaders and policy makers. So, to all of you who are contributing, influencing, and participating in your communities, thank you for reflecting so well on yourselves and on Trent University. A special than you goes out to those alumni, especially Don Tapscott and David Patterson, who were significant contributors to the success of the Beyond Our Walls campaign. Your involvement makes Trent a stronger institution in so many ways. Thanks also to the members of the Alumni Council (all of whom are full of youthful energy and exuberance) for your consistent and valued contributions to alumni stewardship. As all of us work our way into 2002, may we continue to work, in our own small ways, for the improvement of our world and the improvement of the lives of our neighbours. With every good wish! P.S. It is with mixed emotion
that I let you know that Rod will be taking a bit of a backseat
in the Alumni Association for the next couple of years. Rod has
been relocated by cibc to manage the public relations of the
merger between cibc and Barclay's Bank in the Caribbean, with
fellow alum Bob Weir '69. While Rod will maintain an arm's length
level of involvement for the time being, we anticipate his return
to full involvement in the Association AND to visiting him in
Barbados. ![]() ![]() |
