Robin Morris:
Keeping Her Spirit Alive

By Melissa Law '91

When I think back to my days at Trent I can't help but smile. They were the best four years of my life. It was at Trent that I realized learning was endless, the choices we made were our own, and that friendships were like having an extended family. It was at Trent that I met my best friend for life, Robin Marie Morris. What I didn't know then was that life for Robin would be very short.

I remember Robin sitting at the front of every class asking questions and participating every chance she had. Robin was active in so many ways at Trent, from the light-hearted social scene to her serious efforts to introduce a recognized study of Human Resources within the Administrative Studies Program. No matter what Robin did, she touched the life of every person she met.

Robin and I graduated from the Administrative Studies Program, with an emphasis in Human Resources, in the spring of 1995. That same year we went on to pursue our Master of Industrial Relations at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Soon after we launched our careers as Human Resources Professionals at opposite ends of the province, but the distance between us did not matter. Over the years we had become much more than friends; we had become family. Through our career advancements and marriages, we stayed as close as sisters.

On July 3rd, 2001 at the age of 30, Robin said good-bye after a hard battle with cancer. I could not believe that such a young vibrant woman was gone. "Best friends for life" turned out to be far too short. She is greatly missed by her friends and family. Robin was the beloved daughter of Len and Marilyn, sister of Steven, Andrew and Jonathan, wife of Tom Guest, and friend of many.

Although the pain of losing Robin has been hard for everyone her spirit is alive and well in each of us she had touched. In her memory the Robin Morris Memorial Fund has been started. Please help us continue Robin's love for learning and support of Trent University by donating to this Fund. An annual prize will be given to a selected Human Resources student in the Administrative Studies program. I cannot think of a better way to keep Robin's spirit and love for learning alive! Jonathon Cooley attended Trent from 1996 2000 during which time he completed two degrees one in history and one in psychology as well as participating in every aspect of University life. He worked at the Ceilie, was instrumental in the creation of 'The Round Table' student newspaper, and was President of Champlain College Cabinet. Jon passed away during the early morning of June 29th surrounded by loved ones. On July 1st, while all Canadians celebrated Canada Day, those who knew Jon gathered to celebrate his life. This celebration will continue in the hearts of minds of those who ever had the opportunity and the privilege to know Jon.

"Jon's happiest years were spent at Trent University. Cancer eventually defeated his body, but not his spirit. May that spirit live on in each of you, when you think of him. Jon Cooley was here!"
